As a pro-life Jewish believer in Yeshua Ha' Mashiach (Jesus Christ) I was horrified to read an article about Natasha Leggero, on the Conan O'Brien show, claiming she was Jewish and 'the great thing about Judaism is abortion is cool'. Her shameful indifference, callousness and quite frankly, contempt for our Creator and His word, was shocking.
Leggero's attempt to solicit Judaism is of particular interest to me because, as stated, I myself am Jewish. Unbeknownst to me, it would appear (according to the fount of all Judaic knowledge, Miss Leggero, with all her 72 hours of intensive study) Judaism is party to her world view which conveniently enough for Leggero, complies completely with her flagrant disregard for the sanctity of human life.
As a, let's say, re-vert from Christianity back to the Hebrew roots of our faith, I believe, as Yeshua stated in Matthew 5:17-21, that the Tanak (old testament) is as relevant today as it was when the Israelites left Egypt and were in the wilderness for 40 years. I have been studying and walking in the way of the Torah for six years now, I am by no means an expert on Jewish law, but even I can see the flaws in Leggero's stance, which I will address with our Creator's word.
Leggero stated "You get to have a weekly Shabbat, which is just like a party every Friday". Exodus 20;8-11 states;
'Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates, for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.'
Does this sound like a party to you? It is a day of rest, as set apart for Yahweh (God).
Leggero also stated 'the great thing about Judaism is abortion is cool'. Let's take a look at what Yahweh says about babies:
Psalm 139;13-16 'for Thou didst form my inward parts, Thou did cover me in my mother's womb'.
Jeremiah 1:5 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.'
Exodus 21:22-25 tells us that the unborn have rights, that life in the womb is important to our Creator.
Scripture also tells us what we pro-lifers already know, that the unborn have feelings and react to people and voices. Luke 1:41-42 shows that the unborn child Elizabeth was carrying (John the Baptist) jumped for joy on hearing the greeting of Mary; 'When hearing the greeting of Mary, the baby (Yeasua) leapt in her womb'.
I am adamant that it is the responsibility of every believer to speak up and protect these babies who have no voice. Proverbs 31:8 'Open your mouth for the dumb (those unable to speak)'.
Natasha Leggero also claimed 'You can get an abortion on every Jewish holiday and it would be ok'. Again here we see Leggero's blatant ignorance of Judaism and her dearth of knowledge of Jewish holidays. Many of these holidays are high Shabbats or fall on a weekly Shabbat and in many Jewish sects even the act of healing is forbidden on these days, let alone performing a surgical procedure that is not an emergency.
Judaism, like many other religions, has different sects: Orthodox, Rabbinical, Karaite, sephardic, Hasidic, Reform, Yemenite and Messianic to name a few. I consider myself Messianic. The Jewish sect that Leggero has married into, Hasidic Judaism, arose as a spiritual revival movement in western Ukraine during the 18th century with Israel Ben Eliezer as its founding father. This particular sect draws heavily on Lurianic Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism.
All of these Jewish sects have Rabbis that differ on particular things, including abortion. But I do not believe any of them have ever said 'abortion is cool'.
It is my belief that to have a relationship with the Creator, to get to know Him, His will for our lives and His views on topics, including abortion, we must study His word and live how He taught us to. None of us will ever have this perfectly until Yeshua returns, but we must try, and it is a way of life not something you can learn in 72 hours (19 four hour sessions) and then have the gall to go on television and wax lyrical about a subject that even Rabbis themselves tread with caution.
It is pretty clear to me that Leggero and I, although both claiming to be Jewish, have different ideas about what that really means. Natasha Leggero's Judaism is based on Jewish Kabbalah and has given rise to rotten fruit which is obvious to many through her own words of 'Abortion is cool'. I on the other hand have never known the destruction of innocent unborn babies to be anything other than cruel!
My Jewish belief is based on the Word of Yahweh. Yeshua Ha' Mashiach was from the tribe of Judah and we are to follow Him, do as He did, live how He lived. He lived, breathed, walked and taught Torah every day. I believe and have faith in Him and continue to study His word. Doing this has given me a love and passion for the sanctity of Human life.
Matthew 19:14 Yeshua said, 'Let the children come to me, don’t stop them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.”
