Scotland the Grave
Scenes of jubilation and wild celebrations filled Scotland last night, and into this morning as they qualified for their first World Cup in thirty years. The hopes and dreams of a nation were crammed into ninety-seven minutes, and those minutes played out with all the drama and romance found in the works of one Robert Burns. It was wonderful to behold, even for the perennially disappointed Englishman I am. The feelings of the fans at the final moment will live long in their memories and the team of players will be immortals of the Scottish game. For most Scots these men are unknown on a personal level, the sons of other mothers and yet, if we can see and experience how their actions affect a nation, how much more will they affect those who do know and love them?
As we are distracted by the historic achievements on the football field, something dark is moving through the Scottish Parliament. While the legal limit for abortions in Scotland is twenty-four weeks, they are escalating their attempts to abolish this and allow abortions up to birth, including on the basis of sex. We can get into the weeds on the difficulties Scotland has had on actually understanding what sex means, (Isla Bryson, anyone?) but sadly, that’s another discussion for another time. At the very least it again shows how those who wish to have the right to kill the unborn cannot maintain logical arguments or coherent morality.
Abortion is unique in that it is the state-sanctioned killing of innocent human beings by private citizens. That is what it is, and it doesn’t really matter how it’s dressed up, (Isla Bryson, anyone?). If these changes come into law, we would see a Scotland already obsessed with identity, equality and oppression, openly and legally discriminating on the most basic right of all, life, on the basis of sex. This is ludicrous, obviously. But here’s the thing, and for me, the real crux of the abortion question. Where God is not, chaos ensues. Chaos by definition is a complete absence of order and without order, anything goes, and to the strongest. In this case the strongest appears to be the SNP via the Scottish Parliament, completely out of sync with public (based on ComRes surveys from May 2017).
How does a nation with a proud Christian heritage of saints and monasteries, kings and queens arrive here? It gets here by ignoring the laws of morality, the blessings of Christian virtue and the rejection of God and man. With that come the rejection of the idea that we are sacred. If there is no God, nothing is sacred, including us. This is the concept of humanity the Scottish, English and the West at large is being governed by. When will the “choice” of abortion become an expectation to abort if the State believes that you or your child are surplus to requirements? This is indeed the endgame whether we believe it or intend it. We only need to look at the behaviour of totalitarian regimes across the world to see what happens when the State becomes God. We are still horrified, though perhaps less so, at the killing of babies, born and unborn on the basis of race or other circumstances by Nazi Germany and yet somehow that evil is acceptable to Western governments under the veil of “choice”? Be careful what you wish for.
Who among us, even the most devoted football fan, would exchange the euphoria of victory for the love of our children? This may seem a strange question but hear me out. The drama of the game is real, people feel it in and around it. Emotion, careers, money and even national unity are all part of it and yet, for most of us at least it affects nothing of what we feel for our children. While these heroic men grab the headlines across Britain, two things struck me. Firstly, this wonderful thing has happened to Scotland primarily because the men who did it were allowed to be born, Second, and in light of that, how can we help people to realise that real hope and real joy of the kind far deeper than we find in sport can be found only in the promises and the person of Jesus Christ. He made those footballers, gave them their talents and the joy they bring to others blesses everyone. He also made everyone who won’t grab headlines, who will be struggling with fear and doubts for their babies and themselves, and those who sit in positions of power and influence. Let’s pray for these people the same way we pray for those footballers and the games we need them to win. The lives of babies, regardless of sex, is far more important.
